Shelbyville woman behind bars as part of TBI Medicaid fraud investigation

A Shelbyville, Tennessee woman is behind bars after being charged in a TBI Medicaid fraud investigation. According to a TBI media release, the woman faces felony charges after a financial exploitation investigation carried out by special agents with the TBI’s Medicaid Fraud Control Division.

TBI agents began investigating Mary Ann Pruitt after receiving information from the Tennessee Department of Human Services Adult Protective Services on March 20, 2023. TBI says agents determined Pruitt was in possession of a debit card belonging to a former tenant of her residence. She allegedly used the tenant’s debit card to make unauthorized personal purchases and cash withdrawals at businesses in multiple counties over a period of roughly two years. The victim is a TennCare recipient.

The Bedford County Grand Jury returned indictments charging Pruitt with one count of Financial Exploitation of a Vulnerable Adult and one count of Theft on Monday. Authorities took Pruitt into custody and booked her into the Bedford County Jail on Wednesday.
