On October 31, 2023, after 6:00 a.m., El Centro Police responded to the block of 1800 Imp Perel Avenue to investigate a report of theft at a business. A man allegedly entered a convenience store, grabbed two beers, and departed without paying. A female witness tracked the man to the area of Allen Drive and Ocotillo Drive when he became aggressive. He retrieved a brick and threatened to hit the witness, who was still on the phone with a 911 operator. The witness continued to track the suspect to the area between Waterman Avenue and Ocotillo Drive.

When officers arrive at the scene, the man is carrying a brick in one hand and a beer in the other. An officer requests backup. The man refused to respond to verbal commands. Additional officers arrived at the scene. Body cam footage shows the man throwing the brick at officers before the officers shoot him.

Life-saving measures were rendered at the scene. Responding medics transported the man to an area hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

El Centro Police Department has not released the identity of the man killed in the officer-involved shooting.
