On May 28, 2007, at approximately 12:45 a.m., Houston police conducting a welfare check at 16826 City View Place apartment #127 found an unconscious male. Co-workers of the victim became concerned about his welfare when he did not show up for his shift. Responding Houston Fire Department medics pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.

On November 14, 2023, HPD detectives arrested 39-year-old Laura Barrios for the fatal stabbing of 30-year-old Jose Manuel Cruz.

A possible motive for the fatal stabbing is not available at this time.
