Wichita Police arrests 35-year-old man in death of Lonnie Hunter

The Wichita Police Department has announced the arrest of a 35-year-old Wichita man for 2nd Degree Murder in the slaying of 43-year-old Lonnie A. Hunter. According to WPD, officers responded to a report of a cutting near the Arkansas River in the early hours of April 7, 2024. Around 12:40 a.m., officers responded to the scene along the walking path and discovered the victim suffering from multiple stab wounds.

Around 1:19 a.m., EMS pronounced Hunter deceased at the scene. The WPD Homicide Unit responded to investigate. Detectives say they learned that Hunter was walking with a group of people when a confrontation with the suspect ensued. During the altercation, Hunter was stabbed multiple times. Following the fatal stabbing, the suspect fled the scene.

A suspect has been apprehended, but they will not be identified until formal charges are filed. WPD is only describing the suspect as a homeless white male.
