Addis, Louisiana – The West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a death. According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of a body discovered in a sugarcane field near Sid Richardson Road in Addis around 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies remain on the scene and that the investigation is active. No other details are being provided by authorities at this time.
Update – The West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of a suspect in connection to the murder of 18-year-old Ja’Morius Mitchell.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of a body found in a cane field along Sid Richardson Road around 4:05 p.m. on December 18, 2024.
The victim was found by farmers investigating a fire in their field. At the scene, deputies found the body of 18-year-old Ja’Morius Mitchell lying in a drainage ditch and concealed beneath cut sugar cane.
The surrounding field and the victim’s body had been burned, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Mitchell had been reported missing by family on December 12, 2024. Authorities say the victim was positively identified using dental records.
18-year-old Tyler Davis, 18-year-old Sterling Powell, and 23-year-old Devontae Johnson are charged in this case. Davis is charged with Second-Degree Murder and Obstruction of Justice.
Powell and Johnson are charged with Principal to Second Degree Murder and Obstruction of Justice. On December 19, investigators recovered a backpack associated with Davis. The Sheriff’s Office said the backpack contained a cell phone and an AR-15 pistol. Investigators alleged that the victim and suspects were traveling together on the night of the murder.
Authorities allege that Davis used an AR-15 style pistol to shoot Mitchell twice from behind. The suspects allegedly dragged the victim’s body into the field and concealed it. David is accused of returning later and setting site to the area.
