The Washington County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of 43-year-old Kierre L. Williams for homicide and use of a weapon to commit a felony. According to authorities, Father Guttsel was stabbed during an assault and succumbed to his injuries. On the morning of December 10, 2023 around 0505 hours, Washington County 911 Center received a call reporting an attempted break-in at the St. John’s Catholic Church rectory in Fort Calhoun.

Deputies reached the scene in six minutes and found a black male inside the residence. Officers found Father Steven Guttsel suffering from injuries sustained during an assault. The victim was transported to UNMC by Fort Calhoun Rescue where he later succumbed to his injuries. The male suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Washington County Correctional Facility.

In an update, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of Williams from Sioux City, Iowa.
