Victorville Police Department releases name of sergeant involved in lethal force encounter

The Victorville Police Department has announced the name of the sergeant involved in a December 1st lethal force encounter. According to the Victorville Police Department, the Sheriff’s Sergeant involved in the Lethal Force Encounter has been identified as San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Sergeant Shane Andersen.

Sheriff’s Dispatch received a report of a man with a gun at a gas station at 13660 Bear Valley Road on December 1. Dispatch was informed that a woman said the man had a gun before she locked herself inside the bathroom of the business.

The man was later identified as her boyfriend Jorge Cardenas. When the Sheriff’s Sergeant arrived, he approached Cardenas and attempted to detain him. Authorities say Cardenas ran into the store, turned around, and pointed the gun at the sergeant as was approaching the entrance. During the encounter, the suspect and sergeant were struck by gunfire.

The sergeant was taken to a nearby trauma center for treatment for gunshot wounds to his legs. The suspect, 27-year-old Jorge Cardenas of Ontario, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Victorville Police Department said in a social media post that Sergeant Andersen was released from the hospital and continues his recovery at home.
