Unlicensed drunk driver in Orange kills mother and leaves juvenile daughter in critical condition

The Orange Police Department is investigating a possible drunk driving case that killed a mother and left her juvenile daughter in critical condition. OPD says its officers and Orange Fire responded to a multi-casualty incident at the intersection of Tustin Street and Collins Avenue around 8 p.m. on Sunday.

A suspected intoxicated man was driving a Chevy Equinox south on Tustin Street approaching a red light at Collins Avenue. OPD says a Toyota RAV4 was traveling west on Collins Avenue through the green light at Tustin Street.

The Chevy crashed into the side of the Toyota. An Orange woman in the front passenger seat was killed. The woman’s daughter, who was sitting directly behind her, was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

A second juvenile passenger and the man driving the Toyota were taken to hospitals in serious but stable condition. OPD says the unlicensed drunk driver was taken to the hospital with no serious injuries.

Authorities say the preliminary alcohol breath test showed that the suspect’s blood alcohol level was more than double the legal limit. 18-year-old Roberto Noe Monfil Xitlama was arrested for Gross Vehicular Manslaughter While Intoxicated.

He has been booked at OCJ.
