Tallahassee Police Department officers injured in shooting following violent altercation

The Tallahassee Police Department announced today that an officer was injured in a shooting following a violent physical altercation. The incident happened around 2 p.m. when an officer attempted to arrest 36-year-old Willis Adams following a trespassing incident at the Loyalty Inn at 2738 North Monroe Street.

Less than two hours after the first call, the suspect reportedly returned to the hotel where one of the original responding officers was still at the scene. The officer recognized the suspect and gave verbal commands letting Adams know he would be arrested. TPD said the officer used a TASER and his baton, but the suspect violently resisted.

The suspect allegedly escalated his attack and the officer reached for his firearm. As the struggle continued, the officer’s firearm discharged leading to the officer being struck in the hand. The suspect left the scene with the officer’s firearm. A second officer arrived and attempted to take Adams into custody. With assistance from off-duty deputies with the Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office and Leon County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect was apprehended.

TPD said the officer is in stable condition and is expected to recover.
