Takoma Park man behind bars in fatal shooting of Charles Dent

A Takoma Park man is behind bars after being charged in the fatal shoot of a 43-year-old Hyattsville man. According to the Prince George’s County Police Department, Homicide Unit detectives have charged 36-year-old Jamar Welch Sr. in the fatal shooting of Charles Dent.

Around 6:45 p.m. on March 23, 2024, PGCPD officers responded to the 1800 block of Metzerott Road following a report of a shooting. At the scene, responding officers located Dent outside suffering from a gunshot wound. Dent was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Detectives say the preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect shot the victim during a dispute. The suspect and victim were known to each other. Jamar Welch Sr. was taken into custody in Washington DC and awaits extradition to Prince George’s County. Welch is charged with first and second degree murder as well as related charges.
