The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that stemmed from an argument between a woman’s boyfriend and her estranged husband. KCSO says a 21-year-old Bainbridge Island man has been hospitalized after he was shot following a high-speed chase and collision.
Authorities say the victim and his 31-year-old girlfriend were near the County Fairgrounds around 5:30 p.m. on October 12. The woman was meeting her husband so he could pick up their eight-year-old son following a visit.
The woman dropped her boyfriend off at the fairground first before dropping off the son with his father. When the woman returned for her boyfriend, her husband allegedly drove by while shooting at the couple.
The couple was traveling northbound on Nels Nelson Road. KCSO says the husband passed the victims, made a U-turn, and rammed into their vehicle head-on. The husband and boyfriend exited and began yelling at each other.
The husband allegedly pulled out a .22 caliber handgun and shot the boyfriend in the abdomen. KCSO says the woman exited the vehicle leading to a fight between all three. The gun was separated and guarded by a witness.
The two men ended up fighting in a ditch. A KCSO deputy reached the scene and found the victim holding the suspect down in a headlock in the ditch. The 21-year-old boyfriend was transported to Harborview Medical Center for treatment.
The 40-year-old husband was taken to St. Michael’s Medical Center for a blow to the head. He was booked into the Kitsap County Jail on suspicion of First-Degree Assault and Drive-By Shooting. The woman and child were not injured.
