The Seattle Police Department is investigating after a collision involving a stolen vehicle left the suspect critically injured in the South Park neighborhood. Around 6:15 p.m. on Friday evening, SPD officers responded to assist King County Sheriff’s Office deputies with their pursuit of a carjacked vehicle stolen in Burien. The vehicle was occupied by two suspects and was stopped for heavy traffic at Harbor Avenue Southwest and Southwest Street Spokane, according to authorities.
The 21-year-old driver exited the vehicle and fled before being apprehended by KCSO deputies. The juvenile male moved to the driver’s seat and fled at a high rate of speed. SPD and KCSO did not pursue the stolen vehicle, according to a news release. Just after 6:30 p.m., dispatch received reports of a crash at West Marginal Way Southwest and 2nd Avenue involving the stolen vehicle.
Authorities say witnesses reported that the stolen vehicle hit a semi-truck before bursting into flames with the suspect still inside. The Seattle Fire Department reached the scene, removed the suspect, and provided medical aid. The man was taken to Harborview Medical Center with serious burns and in critical condition.
A 52-year-old semi-truck driver was treated for minor injuries. The King County Sheriff’s Office will investigate the carjacking.
