The Santa Fe Police Department announced the arrest of 27-year-old Irving Valverde of Santa Fe on Friday evening. He is facing multiple charges after allegedly causing a multi-vehicle hit-and-run crash at the intersection of Cerrillos Road and St. Michaels Drive. Around 7 p.m., officers responded to a report of a multiple-vehicle crash at the aforementioned location.
A witness informed dispatch that a vehicle had hit numerous vehicles while racing and was weaving through traffic before running a red light and causing a crash. Upon arrival, officers found the northbound lanes of Cerrillos blocked due to debris from the crash as well as the suspect vehicle.
No injuries were reported. The suspect was spotted fleeing the scene after the crash. In total, seven automobiles were involved in the crash. Authorities learned that Valverde was the driver of the suspect vehicle. Officers met with his family in order to help find him and confirm his involvement in the crash. At 8:30 p.m., police received a call for service from Valverde’s residence claiming he was involved in a domestic violence incident at the location.
Officers learned later that a family confronted Valverde at a neighbor’s residence and he allegedly physically attacked a family member. When officers reached the residence, Valverde reportedly came outside armed with a kitchen knife. He allegedly refused their instructions to drop the knife and walked through the parking lot of the apartment complex.
He also allegedly picked up a rock and threw it at officers. A taser was deployed, but it was not effective. At one point, Valverde allegedly turned around and asked officers, “What the (expletive) are you going to do?” An officer deployed a less lethal bean bag shotgun four times striking Valverde.
At that point, Valverde allegedly threw the knife at the officer and continued resisting officers. When additional officers reached the scene, Valverde was taken into custody without further incident.
He is charged with Aggravated Assault Upon a Peace Officer, Assault Upon a Peace Officer, Battery, Resisting, Evading or Obstructing an Officer, Reckless Driving, Failure to Give Immediate Notice of Accident, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.
