San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office arrests felon for brandishing a firearm

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office says it has arrested a felon for possessing and brandishing a firearm. SMCSO reports that a suspect was arrested on Sunday afternoon after brandishing a gun outside a Millbrae Safeway.

Around 1 p.m. on August 25, 2024, deputies responded to the Safeway in the 500 block of El Camino Real in Millbrae. SMCSO says the caller informed authorities that a man had brandished a gun in the parking lot.

Deputies located the suspect vehicle traveling southbound in the 200 block of El Camino Real. Following a traffic stop, SMCSO says deputies detained 36-year-old Mateialona Tangatailoa of Redwood City.

Authorities allegedly found an unregistered handgun during the investigation. Police say Tangatailoa is prohibited from having a gun. He was arrested and booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility.

Tangatailoa is charged with Brandishing a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm by a Person with a Felony Conviction, Possession of Ammunition by a Felon, Carrying Loaded Firearm on Person or in Vehicle, Concealed Firearm in Vehicle, and Child Abuse.
