Roswell Police arrest man accused of shooting ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend out of jealousy

A 40-year-old man is behind bars in connection to a fatal shooting in Roswell, New Mexico. The Roswell Police Department announced on social media that a man has been arrested and charged in the fatal shooting of another local man at an apartment complex on Friday night.

40-year-old Paul Ybarra-Romero is accused of killing 26-year-old Christopher Bargas inside the apartment of Romero’s ex-girlfriend and Bargas’s current girlfriend. RPD says the woman and three juvenile children were inside the apartment at the time of the fatal shooting.

Ybarra-Romero is accused of entering the apartment without permission before shooting the victim. Ybarra-Romero is charged with First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Burglary, Aggravated Assault on a Household Member, and three counts of Child Abuse.

RPD officers responded to the Valle Encantada Apartments in the 2000 block of South Sunset Avenue around 11:30 p.m. on June 21. At the scene, officers found Bargas unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest inside the apartment.

The victim was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Ybarra-Romero was found standing in the parking lot of the apartment complex with a gun on the ground nearby.

Investigators believe Ybarra-Romero shot the victim because he was upset that his ex-girlfriend was in a relationship with Bargas.
