The Rochester Police Department has announced an arrest in connection to the death of five-year-old Malaki Stovall. RPD reports that the porch of 1290 Portland Avenue was intentionally set on fire causing the entire structure to be destroyed on July 29, 2024.
Five-year-old Malaki Stovall was trapped inside, but rescued by firefights. The five-year-old was transported to an area hospital where he passed away. Two firefighters were also injured while fighting the fire.
Investigators from RPD’s Major Crimes Homicide Unit, RFD, ATF have been working to determine who started the fire and why. Authorities say it was determined that the suspects used a flammable substance to ignite the front porch of the home.
21-year-old Tiakalya and 31-year-old Taquida Hendrix were identified as individuals who intentionally started the fire. RPD confirms they are sisters. Around 3 p.m. on August 6, 2024, the United States Marshals Violent Felony Fugitive Task Force located Tiakalya Hendrix and took her into custody.
Tadquida was taken into custody around 6 p.m. on August 6. They are charged with Murder in the Second Degree and Arson in the First Degree.
