Robbery of Navy Federal Credit Union leads to deadly officer-involved shooting in Newport News

The Newport News Police Department was involved in an officer-involved shooting on Saturday morning. NNPD reports that officers responded to the Navy Federal Credit Union in the 12000 block of Jefferson Avenue for an armed robbery around 11:49 a.m. on July 27, 2024.

An employee informed authorities that an adult male had entered the bank, displayed a firearm, and demanded money. The man left the store with an undisclosed amount of money and fled in a vehicle.

Officers found the vehicle and carried out a high-risk traffic stop. An adult male and an adult female exited the vehicle and were detained. Another adult male was found in the back seat.

The man allegedly exited the vehicle and pointed a gun directly at officers leading to an officer-involved shooting. The suspect was eventually transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

NNPD have identified the deceased as 39-year-old Stephan Allan Williams of Hampton, Virginia.
