The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deputy involved shooting. According to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office, a Hemet Station deputy was pumping gas at a business in the vicinity of Meridian Street and Florida Avenue in Hemet. The deputy became aware of a suspect standing on the sidewalk holding a gun.
Authorities say the deputy gave the suspect commands, but the suspect ignored those commands. The suspect continued to manipulate the weapon until the deputy-involved shooting occurred, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.
The involved deputy was uninjured during the incident. The suspect was provided medical aid before being transported to a local hospital. The deputy will be placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with department policy.
The identity of the deputy will not be released at this time. The investigation into the deputy-involved shooting will be led by investigators from the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office and the California Highway Patrol assigned to the Riverside Sheriff’s Force Investigations Detail.
Authorities did not clarify the extent of the suspect’s injuries.
