According to a press release, the Shasta County Multi-Agency Officer Involved Critical Incident Response Team (OICIRT) responded to an officer-involved shooting involving RPD.
Detectives say that RPD officers attempted to contact an adult male seated in a vehicle around 4:00 p.m. on March 26.
The man was parked in the Safeway shopping center on East Cypress Avenue. OICIRT says the officers knew the man who had an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest.
Authorities say verbal commands were given to the driver in an attempt to place him under arrest. One of the officers approached the vehicle before the driver allegedly forced a violent confrontation and accelerated the vehicle toward the officer.
At this point, an officer-involved shooting occurred. Authorities say the driver continued to accelerate and fled through the parking lot towards Lowes in an attempt to avoid arrest.
Officers pursued the vehicle as it continued across East Cypress Avenue and south onto Alfreda Way. The driver ultimately crashed into an unoccupied parked vehicle near the intersection of Alfreda Way and Downard Lane.
Officers approached the man and realized he had been shot during the shooting. The driver was transported to an area hospital where he is still receiving treatment.
OICIRT says the officers were not injured during the encounter. The identities of the suspect and the officers are not being released at this time. Body camera footage is expected to be released within 45 days.
