Portland Police arrests suspect in early morning fatal assault on the Eastbank Esplanade

The Portland Police Bureau has identified the suspect who allegedly assaulted a victim early this morning. In a media release, PPB said that Central Precinct officers responded to a report of an assault in progress in the 00 block of Southeast Madison Street around 4:26 a.m. on March 22, 2024. At the scene, firefighters were already on the scene. Community members had intervened in the assault.

Officers detained the suspect. The victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The victim is believed to be an adult male. In a later update, PPB said that 29-year-old Abel Nistor was released from the hospital and booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on a charge of Murder in the Second Degree.

The name of the victim will be released at a later time. PPB says the preliminary investigation indicates that community members stepped in to stop the violent assault, including an armed security officer, Station 21 firefighters, and a waste transportation employee. Officers were on the scene within five minutes of being dispatched.
