Port Charlotte, Florida – The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office says a man who was facing sexual abuse charges took his life when deputies came to arrest him.
According to a CCSO statement, the Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl by a 49-year-old man. The allegations alleged that the abuse had occurred for seven years.
The CCSO Major Crimes Unit says it identified the suspect as Eberto Pupo Calzada. Authorities say probable cause was established to arrest Calzada.
On January 23, 2025, CCSO says Major Crimes detectives obtained a warrant for Calzada’s arrest for a charge of Sexual Battery Over 12 but Under 18 Years Old by Familial or Custodian.
CCSO says deputies attempted to serve the warrant around 9 p.m., but Calzada took his life with a single gunshot wound to the head. No other details are available at this time.
