Update 4/20/2024 – The Birmingham Police Department has announced the arrest of a 33-year-old man in connection to the murder of Anthony Lambert Jr. BPD detectives obtained an arrest warrant in the murder of Lambert who was fatally shot in the 900 block of 58th Street Ensley on April 18, 2024.
The suspect has been identified as 33-year-old Gary Steele or Bessemer, Alabama. BPD says the suspect turned himself into police at BPD Headquarters on the day of the shooting. BPD detectives presented case information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office on April 19.
As a result, detectives obtained a warrant for Murder. Steele is being held at the Jefferson County Jail with no bond.
Original – Birmingham Police are on the scene of a homicide following a ShotSpotter alert earlier today. In a video statement, Officer Truman Fitzgerald said West Precinct officers responded to the 5700 block of Court I around 4:20 p.m. today.
Officers were informed that a person was lying unresponsive in the front yard of a residence in the 900 block of 58th Street Ensley. At the scene, responding BPD officers witnessed an adult male lying unresponsive suffering from visible signs of trauma.
Birmingham Fire & Rescue personnel pronounced the victim deceased at the scene. Officer Fitzgerald explained that the preliminary investigation indicates that the victim was involved in an argument with one or two adult males. One or more of the suspects fired shots at the victim before fleeing the scene.
BPD learned that one of the men was en route to BPD headquarters to turn himself in. A person of interest was contacted by officers at headquarters. Homicide Detectives will interview that individual before presenting evidence to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office who will decide whether criminal charges should be filed.
