Peoria Police arrest 14-year-old and 33-year-old in fatal shooting of 10-year-old boy

The Peoria Police Department has announced the arrest of a 14-year-old suspect and a 33-year-old man in connection to the fatal shooting of a 10-year-old boy. PPD reports that its officers responded to the 600 block of W. RB Garrett for a Shot Spotter alert of two rounds fired just after 7:30 p.m. on September 29, 2024.

At the scene, officers found a 10-year-old male victim down suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. On October 2, 2024, PPD Detectives announced that they had identified 33-year-old Maurice D. Sargent as a suspect in the case.

Sargent was taken into custody without incident on October 1. He was booked on charges of First Degree Murder and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon. On October 2, 2024, detectives identified a 14-year-old male as a suspect in the case.

The juvenile was arrested for Attempted Armed Robbery.
