Oneonta Police Department investigating shooting after victim turns up at the hospital

The Oneonta Police Department is investigating a shooting late Wednesday after a man showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound. OPD was called to investigate by AO Fox Hospital emergency room staff around 7:40 p.m. on April 10, 2024. Officers responded to the hospital where they learned that a 51-year-old male victim arrived by a third party in a private vehicle.

The vehicle left the scene before police arrived. OPD says the victim stated he was on Chestnut Street when he was injured by a bullet. Authorities searched Chestnut Street, but they were not able to find any evidence that the incident occurred in that area. No witnesses were located. Bassett Hospital Security Staff provided surveillance video to investigators showing the vehicle that dropped off the victim.

An Otsego County deputy located the vehicle on I88 and carried out a traffic stop. Three people were in the vehicle, but the driver was the only one present when the victim was transported to the hospital. The driver indicated that the male victim was discovered on River Street somewhere between Mitchell Street and Wilcox Avenue.

Despite searching the area, investigators were not able to find any related evidence. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call OPD at 607-432-1111.
