Newport News Police Department officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Cleveland Avenue for an armed, suicidal individual inside a vehicle just after 8 p.m. on December 19, 2023. At the scene, the incident escalated into a tactical situation leading to the deployment of the TAC Unit as well as negotiators.

NNPD said in a statement that the individual exited the vehicle and walked towards officers with a firearm in his hand. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation. At one point, the subject reportedly discharged his firearm close to the officers before a struggle ensued over the firearm.

Police say the subject raised the firearm during the struggle leading to an exchange of gunfire. The subject was hit by gunfire and was transported to an area hospital for treatment. An officer was shot in his department-issued taser on his belt but did not need medical attention.

No other officers were injured. Police say charges are pending.
