Update – Arrest documents allege the 16-year-old accused of fatally shooting a Tacoma bagel shop owner helped others sink the vehicle used in the murder before stealing another getaway vehicle. Malik Cornelius has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the slaying of 32-year-old Jacob Carter.
According to the affidavit, police claim to have linked Cornelius to the murder using surveillance video and ballistics. Court documents allege Cornelius was observed driving a blue Kia Forte that was used in the murder around 10 minutes before he and others killed Carter around 1:30 a.m.
The entire shooting was captured by another crime camera. The Kia Forte was spotted on the footage before NOPD officers were instructed to look for it. Additional footage reportedly shows the suspects driving the vehicle into Bayou St. John around 2:34 a.m. approximately an hour after the killing.
A short time later, the suspects are accused of stealing a silver Kia Rio. Five hours later, the Rio crashed in Jefferson Parish before masked individuals fled the vehicle. Witnesses told authorities that one person returned to the vehicle without a mask to retrieve a firearm.
Police claim the man in question is Cornelius who was taken into custody a short time later. Authorities say ballistics evidence from the scene matched the gun in Cornelius’s possession.
