The Modesto Police Department has announced an arrest in multiple shootings across the city of Modesto. According to a social media post from MPD, 46-year-old Gabriel Martinez was arrested following a months-long investigation. The investigation was started on December 5, 2023 around 8:40 p.m. when officers responded to a report of a person shot in the area of Spruce Street and South Madison Street.
At the scene, officers found an adult female victim with at least one gunshot wound. The victim is recovering from her injuries at the hospital. Detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit say they identified Martinez as the suspect. An arrest warrant for Attempted Murder was obtained and bail was set at $1.8 million.
Detectives say Martinez had gone into hiding. According to detectives, they learned of other crimes Martinez was accused of committing dating back to March 2023. The most recent occurred in November and December. In each case, Martinez is accused of threatening the victims with a firearm. No other injuries have been reported in connection to these crimes.
Additional warrants were obtained. On February 8, 2024, detectives located Martinez at a residence in the 300 block of Covena Avenue. The Crisis Response Unit was activated. Martinez surrendered without incident just before 1 p.m. He is booked on charges of Attempted Murder, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and an unrelated outstanding warrant issued by the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office.
