Matthew Sean Rowley charged in fatal hit-and-run crash that killed pedestrian in Charlotte

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Major Crash Investigation Unit detectives are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash in the Westover Division. Around 10:30 p.m. on December 22, 2023, Westover division officers responded to the intersection of South Tryon Street and Bowman Road. At the scene, officers found an unresponsive female who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The victim was identified as Ericka Laronda Jones. Major Crash Investigation Unit Detectives, the DWI Task Force, the Motor Unit, and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to investigate. According to authorities, the preliminary investigation suggests that the victim was walking on South Tryon Street or crossing South Tryon Street.

An Infiniti G37 Sport collided with the victim. The driver failed to stop, render aid, or call emergency services. Police say the occupant of the Infiniti left the victim on the side of the road and fled the scene. The vehicle in question was located a few blocks from the scene. On December 23, 2303, Major Crash Investigation Unit detectives identified Matthew Sean Rowley as the driver of the 2009 Red Infiniti G37 Sport that was involved in the fatal collision.

Rowley had been charged with Felony Hit and Run Causing Death and Reckless Driving. After an interview with detectives, he was handed over to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
