The Rumford Police Department announced that it presented its findings to the Oxford County Grand Jury following an investigation into a fatal crash on Route 2 last March. The Grand Jury handed down charges against 42-year-old Matthew Kellogg in the fatal crash that killed his nine-year-old son.
Kellogg is facing charges of Felony Manslaughter, four counts of Felony Aggravated Assault, three counts of Felony Aggravated Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol, three counts of Driving to Endanger, three counts of Felony Reckless Conduct with a Dangerous Weapon, and two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
RPD says the investigation indicated that Kellogg was driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol concentration over the legal limit around 3:12 p.m. on March 9, 2024. Kellogg’s six-year-old son and nine-year-old son were passengers in the vehicle.
Kellogg’s vehicle allegedly swerved left crossing the centerline and into the path of a 2005 Volvo 80 4-door being driven by 61-year-old F. Michael Piveronas. Police say Piveronas tried to avoid the crash but was unable to do so quickly enough.
Kellogg’s vehicle crashed head-on into Piveronas’ vehicle. As a result, Piveronas suffered life-threatening injuries and still has yet to fully recover. Kellogg’s nine-year-old son succumbed to his injuries at an area hospital.
His six-year-old son was rushed to Rumford Hospital and stabilized before being transferred to a Portland hospital. Kellogg was also treated at Rumford Hospital and transported to a Lewiston Hospital for treatment.
Kellogg and the six-year-old have since been released. RPD says the investigation revealed no evidence to find any fault with Piveronas or his vehicle. Multiple containers of opened and unopened alcohol were allegedly found in Kellogg’s vehicle.
RPD says Kellogg has made arrangements to surrender to authorities in Maine.
