Maryland authorities investigating police-involved in-custody death in Hagerstown

The Hagerstown Police Department reports that the Independent Investigations Division is investigating a police-involved in-custody death in Hagerstown. HPD says its officers were carrying out a search warrant at a residence in the 100 block of East Washington Street around 10:15 p.m. on October 26, 2024.

HPD says a man was located outside the residence. The man was handcuffed and placed into a police cruiser during the search. Authorities say the man was in the backseat of a police cruiser when he vomited, had difficulty breathing, and became unresponsive.

Police say officers immediately rendered medical aid. The man was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. HPD confirms the officers were equipped with body-worn cameras and dashboard cameras.

The IID should release the name of the decedent and the officers within two business days of the incident. Any body-worn camera footage should be released within 20 business days.
