The Spokane Valley Police Department has announced that a suspected impaired driver unsuccessfully fled on foot and in a vehicle. A news release from the Spokane Valley Police Department explained that a Spokane Valley Deputy witnessed a Toyota truck stopped at a red light at Pines on December 1, 2023 around 11:20 PM.
The deputy noticed that the vehicle’s headlights were off. When the light turned green, the Toyota truck continued east. The deputy activated his emergency lights, made a U-turn, and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver of the truck, who was later identified as 28-year-old Alejandro N. Manzo, allegedly turned into a parking lot, made a wide turn, and accelerated causing his tires to spin in the fresh snow.
With Manzo’s vehicle facing the deputy, he allegedly put the truck in reverse and backed onto Sprague. Manzo continued west on Sprague. At one point, Manzo drove over the raised center divider causing damage to his rear tire, according to authorities. Manzo lost control and spun out several times. With the left rear tire completely flat and coming apart, Manzo spun out and stopped in a snowbank on Valleyway.
Authorities say he fled on foot with deputies pursuing him and ordering him to stop. In the 200 block of North Skipworth, deputies lost sight of the suspect. Police set up a perimeter before a K9 unit joined the search. Manzo was located hiding under a vehicle and provided with medical attention.
Manzo’s passenger told authorities he had just met Manzo at a bar. Authorities determined that the passenger did not commit a crime so he was released. The Spokane Valley Police Department said Manzo told deputies he was homeless and sleeping under the vehicle where he was found. Authorities noticed signs of alcohol use and obtained a search warrant for blood sample testing.
Manzo’s criminal history revealed he was on federal supervised probation and has convictions for Rendering Criminal Assistance, Drive-by Shooting, Assault, Bail Jumping, and DUI. His driving privileges were suspended and he was required to have an interlock device in his vehicle. His truck did not have an interlock device.
Manzo was booked into the Spokane County Jail for Attempting to Elude Law Enforcement, DUI, Obstructing, Operating a Vehicle w/o an Interlock Device, and Driving while Suspended. Judge B. Beggs set bail at $10,000 which Manzo posted and was released. The US Marshals rearrested Manzo and booked him into the Spokane County Jail on a US Marshal Hold on December 4, 2023. He remains behind bars.
