A man is dead and an infant is in critical but stable condition following a hostage situation in Surprise, Arizona. The Surprise Police Department reports that officers responded to a home in the area of 168th Avenue and Jenan Drive following a 911 call about a woman and infant being held hostage around 11:30 a.m. on May 17.
SPD has identified the suspect as 51-year-old Todd Christopher Marchetti. SPD says Marchetti refused to come out of the house. Following a standoff that lasted several hours, the residence caught fire. At this time, the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
Once authorities entered the residence, they found Marchetti with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. An infant male victim around six-months-old was transported to an area hospital. The child is in critical but stable condition.
