Late night attempted vehicle theft leads to fatal shooting in Slidell

The Slidell Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting stemming from an attempted vehicle theft. SPD reports that it received a report of a suspicious person at 1303 Town Center Parkway, Retreats at Fremaux Town Center Apartment, around 1 a.m. on August 24, 2024.

The caller informed SPD that they saw a subject who appeared to be attempting to break into a parked vehicle. As officers were responding to the scene, a second caller reported gunshots being fired in the area of The Masons Apartment Complex. The gunshots may have come from a black SUV.

At the scene, officers found a black Cadillac Escalade turning onto Old Spanish Trail from Town Center Parkway. SPD officers attempted to stop the vehicle but it fled. SPD followed the vehicle until it stopped in New Orleans and three males fled on foot.

One suspect was found hiding underneath a raised home. A second suspect was found behind a shed with a stolen firearm. As officers continued searching for the third suspect, they found a deceased male in the rear seat of the SUV with an apparent gunshot wound.

Investigators believe the four subjects traveled to area apartment complexes to steal vehicles. The subjects were allegedly trying to steal. A Chevrolet Camaro from The Mason at 1640 Center Parkway. The owner of the vehicle heard the alarm and intervened.

An exchange of gunfire led to one of the suspects being struck. After the shooting, the four suspects fled in the Cadillac Escalade. Two of the suspects have been identified as 17-year-old Johnvon Victor and 17-year-old Emon Starks.

Victor is charged with Illegal Carrying of Weapons; Burglary Tools, Simple Burglary; Armed with Firearm, and Aggravated Flight from an Officer. Starks is charged with the same and Illegal Possession of Stolen Firearms.

Charges of Murder and Attempted Murder are pending as a result of the exchange of gunfire and their accomplice being fatally shot. A third suspect remains at large. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 504-822-1111.
