Las Vegas Police investigating officer-involved shooting after suspect stole police car and killed one victim

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is investigating its 9th officer-involved shooting of 2023. Around 3:46 a.m. on December 27, 2023, dispatch received reports of illegal shooting near Placid Street and Maulding Avenue. Once officers reached the area, they heard shots coming from an unknown direction before witnessing an unoccupied patrol vehicle struck by gunfire.

Officers took cover and attempted to set up a containment area. A male suspect broke through and stole an unoccupied LVMPD patrol vehicle which was used to flee the area. A vehicle pursuit was initiated as the suspect drove to the 7300 block of South Durango Drive where he abandoned the vehicle. In the area, police say the suspect carjacked a victim at gunshot leading to a second vehicle pursuit.

The suspect drove to the 8500 block of Blue Diamond Road where he abandoned the stolen truck and attempted to carjack a citizen in an SUV. When the suspect pointed a firearm at the citizen, an LVMPD officer discharged their weapon. The suspect fled in the SUV. The suspect continued to the area of Durango Drive and Windmill Lane where he attempted to carjack a victim in a van.

Police say they heard a gunshot and witnessed the suspect removing the injured citizen from the van. LVMPD officers and Nevada State Police officers discharged their weapons toward the suspect’s vehicle as it was fleeing the scene. The injured citizen was later pronounced deceased at the scene. The suspect stopped the van near Durango Drive and Agate Avenue. Following SWAT response, it was discovered that the suspect was injured. The suspect was later pronounced deceased at the scene.
