Lansing Police release statement after fatally shooting dog

Lansing, Michigan – The Lansing Police Department has released a statement after fatally shooting a dog earlier this week.

According to LPD, officers were attempting to contact a suspect in a larceny complaint in the 400 block of South Francis Avenue around 3:15 p.m. on January 16, 2025.

In a statement, LPD said that officers were also aware that the suspect had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

Officers located the suspect in a vehicle with another individual and were allegedly attempting to place him into custody. LPD says the suspect was refusing to exit the vehicle and was resisting officers.

A dog inside the vehicle bit the officers’ hands and arms, according to LPD. The dog allegedly continued to bite the officers in the legs after the accused was removed from the vehicle.

The suspect allegedly continued to resist outside the vehicle. An LPD officer fired one found and fatally shot the dog.

Both officers were taken to the hospital for treatment before being released. LPD says animal control was notified.
