Knoxville Police arrest Tavares Harrison in murder of man with an axe

26-year-old Tavares Harrison has been arrested and charged with Second-Degree Murder in the death of a man in the 9900 block of Kingston Pike. The Knoxville Police Department reports that officers responded to Cokesbury United Methodist Church around 11:45 a.m. on July 23, 2024.

Harrison allegedly showed up to the church suffering from non-life-threatening stab wounds. KPD says officers were led to a encampment in the area of Kingston Pike and I-140 where a man was found deceased.

The victim has been positively identified as a 55-year-old man. KPD says the victim died of apparent blunt force trauma. The autopsy revealed that the victim was hit with an axe multiple times.

Harrison was treated at an area hospital before being questioned by Homicide Unit detectives. KPD alleges that Harrison and the victim were involved in a fight when Harrison hit the victim with an axe. Harrison was booked into the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility.
