The Killeen Police Department was involved in an officer-involved shooting on Wednesday night. KPD says it received a 911 call about an armed subject around 9:09 p.m. on July 31, 2024.
Officers responded to the scene at 9:12 and the first officer arrived at 9:17 p.m. KPD says the officer witnessed a male with a backpack walking in circles. The officer waited for back up believing the subject may be in mental distress.
A second officer reached the scene at 9:24 p.m. Together, the officers asked the man to put down his backpack. At this point, the man allegedly retrieved a black semi-automatic weapon and moved it upward and outward.
One officer feared the man was about to shoot so he discharged his duty weapon. KPD says it is unknown if the officer struck the man. An autopsy is pending at this time. The man simultaneously placed the weapon towards him taking his life.
The name of the 25-year-old man is not being identified at this time.
