Killeen, Texas – Killeen Police say they are currently investigating an incident at the Killeen Mall. According to KPD, it is aware of the incident and there are some injuries being reported.
KPD says the area is secure. Authorities ask that everyone avoid the area until the matter can be resolved.
Update – KPD says there is no active shooter at the Killeen Mall. DPS, KFD, and KPD are on the scene investigating. Police are not providing any other details at this time.
At this time, there are unconfirmed citizen reports that an individual drove a truck into the JCPenney at the mall and that the suspect had opened fire at police.
Update 2 – The Killeen Police Department said a possible drunk driver fleeing from police drove through the glass doors and continued driving through the JCPenney store. The suspect allegedly hit multiple people while driving through the store.
Five patients were taken to an area hospital with minor to life-threatening injuries. KPD says this was not an active shooter situation. A Trooper and KPD officer continued on foot.
Officers fatally shot the suspect to end the threat, according to KPD.
Update – Authorities now say 53-year-old John Darrel Schultz drove his truck through the JCPenney at the Killeen Mall and injured five people. Schultz, of Kempner, was fatally shot by police at the scene.
Four victims were taken to hospitals for treatment. Authorities say they range in age from six to 75 years old. The chase started around 5 p.m. on Interstate 14 in Belton after police received reports of an erratic driver in a black pickup truck.
At some point, Schultz pulled off the road and drove into the parking lot of the mall. He drove through the JCPenney and struck multiple people. Authorities say he traveled several hundred yards.
