The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a shooting at the Shawnee Sports Complex in the Institute area. Around 3 p.m. on May 19, 2024, deputies responded to a shots-fired call at the location.
KCSO says Metro 911 received multiple calls about shots fired in the area. Within minutes, off-duty officers were at the scene in the 200 block of Smooth Avenue. Deputies found evidence that shots had been fired around the apartment complex on Smooth Avenue.
No victims or injuries have been discovered. KCSO reports that deputies obtained information about the alleged suspects and the potential suspect vehicle. Nitro Police found a vehicle matching the description and carried out a traffic stop on Tyler Ridge Road.
Several individuals have been detained. An event was being held at the Shawnee Sports Complex at the time of the shooting. The activities were suspended for safety reasons. West Virginia State University was also placed on lockdown although it has since been lifted.
