Joliet, Illinois – The Joliet Police Department has announced the arrest of 46-year-old Erik Aviles for Aggravated Unlawful Restraint and two counts of Aggravated Assault.
According to JPD, officers responded to the 500 block of Irving Street for a report of a disturbance involving a gun around 12:43 p.m. on January 9.
Police say responding officers made contact with an adult male and an adult female who reported they were being threatened by the homeowner with a handgun.
Authorities said in a statement that further investigation indicated that Aviles had hired the cleaning service through an online platform. The workers arrived at his residence around 9:30 a.m.
Near the end of the appointment, Aviles allegedly became upset and accused the couple of stealing. He allegedly retrieved a handgun and pointed it at the male victim.
When the couple attempted to leave, Aviles allegedly grabbed the female by her jacket and used his arm to press her against the door to prevent her from leaving.
Aviles is also accused of holding the handgun to her head and body before ordering her to leave the residence. Police confirm the victims fled the home safely.
Following a brief standoff and shelter-in-place order, Aviles exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident. Authorities say the handgun was determined to be a replica toy and there was no evidence to support a claim of theft.
