Kent Police announced that a violent man had been jailed following an unprovoked attack on a female victim in Maidstone. On New Year’s Eve 2022, an intoxicated Joe Smith went to a hotel on Forstal Road where he met a victim he already knew. The couple left when Smith decided to visit a nearby shop to buy more alcohol. Authorities say he became increasingly abusive towards the victim.
When the couple returned to the hotel, Smith became aggressive again and punched the victim in the face with considerable force. Smith reportedly threatened the victim when she attempted to leave. The victim reached the reception area where staff called police and Smith was taken into custody.
Due to the assault, the victim needed 15 stitches in her lip and jaw. On June 23, 2023, Smith was convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. On December 19, 28-year-old Joe Smith was sentenced to five years and eight months’ imprisonment. Upon release, he will have two years on licence and will be subject to an eight-year restraining order.
