Indianapolis Police shoot suspect following call for welfare check

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was involved in an officer-involved shooting on Wednesday. IMPD reports that North District officers responded to the 7800 block of River Road for a welfare check for a female who was not answering her phone around 11:30 a.m.

As officers were traveling to the scene, dispatch informed them that the caller said someone was holding the female hostage. At the scene, officers came in contact with the female caller who was outside the apartment building.

The caller told officers that the woman was inside being held hostage. IMPD reports that officers approached the apartment, knocked on the door, and announced themselves. Following multiple attempts, officers heard a female scream from inside.

An officer near the rear saw a male inside the apartment with a firearm. Officers forced entry into the apartment and were reportedly met with gunfire from the suspect. An officer-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was shot at least once. The man was transported to an area hospital in stable condition. The female was not injured. No officers were injured during the incident. IMPD confirms the officers involved were wearing body-worn cameras at the time.
