The Independent Force Investigation Team has announced it is investigating an officer-involved shooting for the Bellevue Police Department. The shooting occurred on December 5, 2023, and the investigation is ongoing. According to a press release from IFIT-KC, members are interviewing witnesses and collecting video evidence for review.

The preliminary investigation shows that the Bellevue Police Department was dispatched to the area of the 15500 block of Main Street around 6:35 PM on December 5 after receiving a report of a man walking around with a knife. Multiple Bellevue Police Department officers arrived.

At least one officer contacted the subject who is reported to be a 44-year-old male. At some point, it is alleged that the male approached the officer holding a knife in his hand. The officer fired his weapon and struck the man. The 44-year-old male was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Bellevue Police Department officer who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
