The Illinois State Police says it has arrested a suspect involved in the death of a DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Deputy. According to ISP, 44-year-old Nathan P. Sweeney was arrested and charged with DUI and Reckless Homicide in the Line of Duty Death of DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Christina Musil.
Around 10:30 p.m. on March 28, 2024, Musil was sitting in her parked squad car on the shoulder of Illinois Route 23 South of Perry Road in Waterman. A commercial motor vehicle service truck crashed into the back of the squad car. Musil was transported to an area hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.
The driver of the commercial vehicle was later identified as Nathan Sweeney. Initially, Illinois State Police issued citations for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident, Improper Lane Usage, and Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle. During the investigation of the crash, officers say they determined that Sweeney was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash.
The DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office will be charging Sweeney with three counts of Aggravated DUI Causing Death and one count of Reckless Homicide. Sweeney was booked into the Ogle County Jail.
