Update – HCSO has identified the deceased male in this case as 17-year-old Darnell Cotton.
Original Story – The Harris County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a suspect in today’s fatal shooting. In a social media post, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez explained that deputies were dispatched to a crash scene in the 15100 block of Golden Eagle around 3:55 a.m. this morning. It was determined that a black sedan had crashed into a parked vehicle.
A black male in his late teens or early 20s was found deceased from gunshot wounds in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. Investigators say the victim’s vehicle and a gray SUV were involved in a roadway altercation when the victim was shot. The black sedan driven by the victim had been reported stolen earlier from a nearby apartment complex.
In a later update, Sheriff Gonzalez said that Dushawn Caples was identified as the owner of the black sedan stolen by the victim of the shooting. Authorities say Caples admitted to driving his wife’s SUV, chasing, and shooting into the stolen vehicle with an unknown male passenger.
HCSO says that Caples stated the individual refused to stop and he fired shots in the car causing the victim to crash. A murder charge has been filed. Caples was booked into the Harris County Jail. The deceased male has not been identified at this time.
