The Gwinnett County Police Department announced on social media that it had killed a 17-year-old male during an officer-involved shooting. GCPD reports that it received a 911 call from a 17-year-old male saying he was armed with a knife and handgun near the roundabout at Whitehead Road and West Broad Street in Sugar Hill around 4:26 p.m.

The caller reportedly said he was a danger to himself and others. GCPD’s Behavioral Health Unit was alerted and sent a licensed mental health clinician to the scene. On the way, the trained clinician called the 17-year-old and spoke to him over the phone.

The male allegedly told the clinician that he was suicidal and suffering from depression. At the scene, officers found the male in the roadway at the roundabout. Officers parked nearby and gave the juvenile commands to drop the knife.

At some point, the male allegedly began charging at two of the officers in a sprint. He allegedly swung the knife leading to two officers firing their weapons. The 17-year-old was struck at least once and succumbed to his injuries.

The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
