Update 1 – Glenwood Springs Police have provided an update on the incident earlier today. GSPD reports that officers in the area of Midland Avenue and Flat Tops View Drive recognized an individual with an outstanding felony warrant related to firearms charges.

The officers attempted to contact the individual. GSPD says the man produced a firearm causing both officers to retreat. One officer discharged a service weapon. The suspect reportedly moved toward his vehicle.

The officer took up a secondary position and engaged the suspect in gunfire. Only one officer was involved in the shooting. The suspect took cover behind a vehicle. The officers maintained their position until other resources arrived.

When contact was made with the suspect, it was determined that he was deceased. No other injuries have been reported. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation has responded to assist with the processing of the scene.

The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office will carry out the criminal investigation.

Original – The Glenwood Springs Police Department is currently investigating a violent event at the Glenwood Meadows Shopping Center. GSPD reports that there was a violent event and the scene is secure.

At this time, there are no further threats to the public. GSPD confirms the suspect is currently in custody. It is estimated that the scene will remain closed for roughly eight hours. No other details are available at this time.
