The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office has announced that the store clerk will not be charged in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Yaqoub Nagi. A news release explains that the 28-year-old clerk, of Dearborn, will not be charged in relation to the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Taqoub Nagi at a Citgo in Detroit. It has been determined that the clerk acted in lawful self-defense when he shot Nagi.
On November 25, 2023 around 1:07 AM, Detroit officers were sent to the Citgo in the 9100 block of Dearborn Street in reference to a shooting. Once officers arrived, they detained a 28-year-old man who was working as the store’s clerk. Officers observed Mr. Nagi lying inside the gas station suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper body. Medics pronounced Mr. Nagi deceased at the scene.
According to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, the investigation revealed that around 1:05 AM, Nagi entered the gas station and walked behind the counter. The clerk confronted him and observed Nagi holding an object with his hands pointing as if he had a handgun. The clerk fired multiple shots. After the shooting, the clerk remained at the scene until police arrived.
Prosecutor Kym Worthy said, “Last summer, there were a series of shootings at Detroit gas stations – some of them resulted in a loss of life. This case is yet another deadly shooting in a gas station, but the facts are very different. The evidence in this case shows that the actions of the store clerk were in lawful self defense and as a result this office will not be charging him with any crime,” said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.
