Fort Worth Police charge 26-year-old with Capital Murder of Multiple Persons following July 4th shooting

A 26-year-old man has been charged with Capital Murder of Multiple Persons following a shooting on July 4th. The Fort Worth Police Department reports that officers responded to a shooting in East Fort Worth at the intersection of Castleman Street and Wiman Drive around 11:33 p.m. on July 4, 2024.

At the scene, officers found a female victim with a gunshot wound and a second victim who had suffered a medical emergency. Both victims were transported to an area hospital but succumbed to their injuries. Two other shooting victims were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

These victims are expected to survive. The shooting occurred after a crowd of roughly 200 to 300 people took over multiple blocks on Castleman Street and were launching fireworks towards neighboring homes.

Around 11:40 p.m., officers responded to a second fatal shooting in South Fort Worth. Officers arrived in the 7500 block of West Cleburne Road where they found a man with a gunshot wound to his lower body. The victim also succumbed to his injuries.

Two additional shooting victims were taken to a local hospital with injuries sustained during the same shooting incident. Two female shooting victims did not survive their injuries. They are 15 months old and four years old.

Detectives say a fight broke out between the suspect and one of the shooting victims. The suspect allegedly began shooting at the individuals and others. The suspect was also shot during the incident.

FWPD reports that a suspect was identified in connection to the shooting on West Cleburne Road. 26-year-old Kanard Trent Murphy has been charged with Capital Murder of Multiple Persons. Murphy is at an area hospital receiving a medical evaluation.
