The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has announced the arrest of a Sheriff’s Deputy who was under the influence. On November 18, 2023, the Sheriff’s Department received an anonymous tip alleging former Sheriff’s Deputy Ricardo Baires and current Deputy Jonathan Campos were involved in drug activity. An investigation was carried out by the Gangs/Narcotics Division.
Around 10 a.m. on December 17, 2023, investigators observed and contacted Baires and Campos who were sitting in a vehicle at an empty housing development in Hesperia. Authorities say Campos was found to be under the influence of a controlled substance which was believed to be cocaine. Although Campos was off-duty, he was in possession of a firearm.
Authorities say they found cocaine and paraphernalia that indicated sales were found in Baires’ vehicle. Search warrants were obtained for Campos’ and Baires’ residences. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said it found drug paraphernalia at Campos’ residence. Drug sales paraphernalia and ammunition were allegedly located at Baires’ residence.
Campos was arrested for Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance while Armed and Possession of a Firearm While in Possession of a Narcotic Controlled Substance. Baires was arrested for Possession of a Narcotic Controlled Substance for Sales and Prohibited Person in Possession of Ammunition. After being booked, they were released on bail.
Authorities say the investigation uncovered evidence that showed Campos was under the influence while on duty. Following his arrest, Campos resigned from the Sheriff’s Department.
